WHAT KINDS OF FISH CAN WE EXPECT TO CATCH?
On any given day, it is possible to encounter any or all of the classic big game trophy fish including Pacific Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Striped Marlin, Shortbilled Spearfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Skipjack Tuna, Mahi Mahi and Ono.
WHERE DO YOU GO?
We fish different areas of the offshore waters of Maui, Lanai or Kahoolawe depending upon what has been biting in recent days, and the weather conditions.
HOW FAR IS IT TO THE FISHING GROUNDS?
Fish can and often have been caught soon after leaving Maalaea harbor. However, more typically, it takes about an hour to reach some of the more productive areas.
WHAT FISHING STYLES DO YOU USE?
We usually high speed troll using artificial lures. We may also utilize deabait, stripbait, or live bait when available. While we're trolling, the captain and crew search for signs of fish. These signs could include flocks of seabirds feeding on schooling bait, and drifting flotsam which can attract trophy fish.
WHAT KIND OF TACKLE/EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
Strike Zone is equipped with a state of the art electronic depth recorder, and a GPS Nav/Plotter. Fishing tackle onboard includes 20#, 50#, 80# and 130# test with Penn International reels. The vessel is equipped with outriggers and a 130 Pompanette 130 Tournament Series fighting chair.
HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN STRIKE ZONE ACCOMMODATE?
Strike Zone can accommodate 12 anglers on our sportfishing trips, and more non-fishing passengers.
CAN WE BRING OUR OWN FISHING GEAR?
This is not permitted on share boats, and must be discussed/approved by the captain in the case of private charters.
DO WE NEED A FISHING LICENSE?
No license is required.
CAN WE KEEP THE FISH WE CATCH?
You are welcome to keep your catch on our bottom fishing trips only. On our trolling trips, the catch-of-the-day is shared with all our anglers. Depending upon the amount of fish caught, enough filets will be cut up to accommodate anglers for a dinner or two. We'll even give you a few tips on how best to prepare it!
CAN WE ARRANGE TO HAVE OUR FISH MOUNTED / STUFFED?
Absolutely! Just talk to the captain or crew on board and they'll go over the details with you.
WHAT IF THE WEATHER IS BAD?
Weather cancellations are determined by the captain. You will not be charged if the captain cancels a trip due to inclement weather. Rain is not considered inclement weather. If it is raining at your hotel/condo on the morning your trip, do not assume that the trip will be cancelled. The rain is often confined to the land, while offshore is clear and sunny.
WHAT IF WE GET SEA SICK?
This does happen to some people, even on the calmest days. If you are concerned about this, ask your doctor to recommend a prevention medicine for you. Also, avoid heavy drinking the night before, and eat a light breakfast, the morning of the charter.
